FITSI 2008 is a lot of fun!

I'm having a lot of fun at FITSI this week. I get to work with a lot of really smart people, so it's been very stimulating. "FITSI" is the Faculty Instructional Technology Summer Institute at the University of New Hampshire. It's a week long intensive program with presentations from guest speakers, panels with UNH faculty, hands on workshops, and round tables that feature one-on-one help.

Even though technology plays a major role at FITSI, pedagogy takes center stage. Faculty have many opportunities throughout the week to discuss teaching with their colleagues around campus. All disciplines from business to health services to engineering to the humanities and social sciences are represented. Faculty from past FITSIs tell us that talking to other faculty is the best part of FITSI.

FITSI 2008 participants: Post a comment and tell us what your favorite part of FITSI has been.

Thanks for reading my post. We're learning, ultimately, how to provide better services from UNH faculty and students (who are helping this week as "tech buddies).

This week has been a roller coaster of fun, learning and challenges. It has been a long time since I have experienced anything so stretching and informative! Looking forward to putting 'new' ideas into practice in the coming months! Bloggers watch out - Tobie is about!

Terri, How did you post this the day after tomorrow?

It is moving VERY quickly - there is so much to take in that one becomes 'saturated' very quickly, perhaps without time to really process what has been taught. Whew!!

Sounds like a nice way to spend a hot NH week.

I am having fun too.

I have learned several specific things I wanted to know, such as linking to videos in my powerpoint presentations, but also unexpected things. I particularly enjoyed learning about Movie Maker. The "hands on" help has been great!

Sunny day?

I'm converted to the idea that my courses would be improved with some electronic visual props. I'd love a day to collect materials and practice making a powerpoint for a specific course with the promise of more fitsi days to work out the kinks.

In just two days, this workshop has already challenged the ways I have previously thought about technology and pedagogy. I am excited to try many different types of digital media in my classes. What I am particularly interested in is this discourse about the reasons why we use technology in the classroom, how we use it, and when we use it. While I get excited by all the possibilities, and I recognize that I do not understand or use technology as my students do daily in their lives, I also want my use of tech to be appropriate, purposeful and always in relation to my pedagogical goals. I don't want to use tech because it is hip or to engage my students because they are used to looking at images on a screen. I want to use tech as a tool for pedagogy that figures out what engaging students means and does it effectively.

Yes, I agree with you. Moreover, in this hot weather, this is the best place to be, specially with all great people and good food.
