"A blog will only be effective for students in their learning (and for your teaching) if it is relevant to the learning context being provided or developed. From a student's point of view the most pragmatic way in which this is understood is in terms of assessment - if a blog is used but contributes nothing to their final result, then it can be very hard to encourage students to use a blog."

I agree you probably have to grade the student on his/her participation in a blog to ensure motivation. Another strategy may be to have the student create his or her own blog, then use an aggregator to coalesce the links in one interface.
Find out more about aggregators.
Blogs are a great way to post information and share that information with others. I'm eager to learn more about aggregators.
This information looks as though it will be helpful.
tsw appears to be a plant!
I would agree it's important for there to be some additive value to the learning process or course content, but there may be some value in meeting/connecting with students in their space/medium.
This is a great idea for online collaboration. I can see many opporunities for students to be able to share their information with the group and with me.
I believe it is a great idea to get students involved by providing them with the incentive to visit and participate in the blogg. One way of doing this is by posting question and discussions that will contribute to their projects and research.
